Presented by former Garda detective and expert crime scene investigator John Sweetman, Lines of Enquiry will bring you through the crime like no other podcast.
Tuesday, 4th November: GoLoud, the home of Irish podcasting is delighted to announce the launch of Lines of Enquiry.
In this brand new, original podcast we go behind the headlines of some of Ireland’s most well-known cases.
Examining the investigations, critical decisions and evidence that uncovered the truth. With decades of experience in forensic science – John Sweetman spent 25 years as an expert crime scene investigator with the Garda Technical Bureau – join him as he follows the evidence step by step, revealing how chance, persistence, and detail can bring justice to light.
In Lines of Enquiry, no case is ever simple. No question is ever too small. And what is done in the dark, will always be seen in the light.
Lines of Enquiry is grounded in professional forensic expertise and insight. Host John Sweetman’s decades of experience with the Garda Technical Bureau makes him uniquely positioned to bring the listener through the facts, history and cold hard evidence of each case.
Upcoming episodes in season 1 will focus on cases such as –
- The Murder of Mary Gough – a young newly married woman is found dead at the bottom of the stairs in her Dublin home, what seems like a tragic accident soon raises chilling questions.
- The Midlands Letter Mystery – when a series of disturbing anonymous letters arrive at Garda stations across the Midlands, investigators turn to handwriting and delve deep into the mind of a man whose secrets are darker than anyone imagined, uncovering a potential killer waiting to pounce.
- The Murder of Robert Holohan – an 11-year-old boy disappears near his Cork home, sparking one of the largest searches in Irish history and a discovery that would shock the nation.
- The Murder on the Farm – a young man is shot dead on his family farm in North Cork and the truth behind the tragedy lies within the walls of his own home.
For over 25 years, John Sweetman worked as a Detective Garda attached to the Garda Technical Bureau in Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park. He qualified as a Fingerprint Expert and later as a Security Document and Handwriting Expert and has spent the bulk of his career examining crime scenes and scenes of crime exhibits for the purposes of presenting expert identification testimony in Irish Courts.
John Sweetman, host of Lines of Enquiry, said: “After stepping back from a 30-year career in An Garda Síochána, I wanted to share what really happens behind the scenes of major investigations, not just the science or the evidence, but the human impact at the heart of every case.
Every investigation begins with a victim and their family and a single question, what happened here. They are the reason the work is done, the reason every detail matters. The aim is always to uncover the truth, to bring clarity, and to help deliver justice where it’s possible.
With Lines of Enquiry, I hope to bring listeners behind the crime scene tape to better understand that process, the long, often painstaking work that goes unseen but is driven by compassion and respect for those affected.
I’m proud to be part of this new true-crime podcast series and to share that perspective, reminding listeners that behind every case, there’s a person, a story, and a family seeking answers.
I’m delighted to be part of GoLoud’s new true crime podcast series, Lines of Enquiry, and look forward to bringing listeners on this journey.”
As a dedicated member of the Technical Bureau, John was involved in numerous serious crime investigations over the years, up until his retirement from An Garda Siochána in 2023.
A keen artist, with an excellent eye for detail, John put his talent to use in the meticulous and exacting field of forensic comparison and individualisation, using the skills he acquired during his service as a valued member of the Garda Technical Bureau.
Darren Cleary, Head of Digital Audio, GoLoud, Bauer Media Audio Ireland said: “There’s a huge appetite for podcasts that don’t just retell cases, but really explain how investigations work, what it takes to uncover the truth. With Lines of Enquiry, John Sweetman brings listeners inside that process for the first time. True crime is one of the most difficult genres to get right, it demands patience, detail, and respect for the people at the heart of each case. John is uniquely placed to deliver that. T, there is nothing like this podcast in the UK or Ireland. A true crime podcast, presented by someonean expert who actually has been involved in investigating scenes and helping to bring the truth to light.”
